It’s official – we have a WPDownUnder “Stop the WP7 Gen2 count-up clock” Winner!

This morning Australia has finally seen the first Telco-launched Generation 2 Windows Phone Mango handset!  Consequently – we can now award TELSTRA 1st prize in the 2012 Windows Phone 7 Gen2 release award. Accordingly, the WPDownUnder Gen2 launch count-up clock has been stopped at 3 weeks, 2 days and 9 hours into 2012!  Despite the “late to the party” tag – only 3% of WPDownUnder readers accurately selected JAN as the first month in 2012 that a new Gen2 handset would be available here from an Aussie Carrier!

So – now the spotlight turns sharply onto Optus and Vodafone….in a race to see who will be last and latest to the party here in Australia!  And – with a nod to Telstra for getting here first, we acknowledge them as the winner of the WPDownUnder WP7 Gen2 award!  Hopefully this just gets the new device ball rolling (Nokia where are you?).

Better late than not at all (looking at you now Optus and Vodafone!)

Sheeds.

lol – not sure about the rabbit.. a wombat or echidna might have worked better..

does that mean telstra will approve and rollout the 8107 update very shortly – or are they going to end up having the ‘newest device with the oldest software’?

Funny, is not the screen shot in the review showing 7720.68.

yes saw that (that’s makes the supplied o/s version to be 4-5 months old). Am really hoping that was because sheeds had an protype/test handset and the update is about to appear- would be disappointing to new users if it’s being launched with known bugs and no available fix (voicemail etc stuff).

I can confirm that the handset I used was indeed an older prototype/test device. I need to ask Telstra re: the OS release version – and will check on Friday.

Despite this handset being launched in Australia neither of the Telstra shops in adelaides rundle mall had even heard of the handset let alone when they were stocking it. They also had no idea regarding the lumia 800.

The only winpho they had was a very dodgy hd7 whose touch screen was jumping all over the place when you touched it

    Very disappointed

When I covered the Telstra launch of this device on the 24th Jan – I was told it may take up to 2 weeks for stores to be stocked around the country. Twitter reports today have stated Telstra shd have this on demo and in-stock by 7th Feb :)

just went to a telstra shop here in perth and asked for the samsung omnia w, the first guy i asked had no clue but the next salesperson who overheard us came and and told us that he thought he saw it somewhere inside, a few minutes later he came back with it but it’s still in the box but it cannot be opened yet since they’re not yet officially for sale, apparently it’s going to be on the $59 plan, and about the nokia lumia 800, they still have no clue when it is coming
