Nokia Australia’s Stephen Baxter (Lumia Product Manager) Melbourne Media launch address.

Last month WPDownUnder attended and reported on Nokia’s Melbourne media launch for the Lumia WP7 handsets. One of the addresses from this session has now been put up on YouTube by the Nokia Australia team, so we thought we would share it here for our readers that may not have seen it. It’s very much a general intro into the Lumia devices (hardware, services etc) - and a brief overview of the Metro UI and features of Windows Phone.

If you look closely in the crowd, you might even spot the back of WPDownUnder’s boof-head, sitting next to ChevronWP7Labs and Metrotwit / Istartedsomething luminary @Longzheng! I can attest to the fact that I was paying attention – the glances down were to record selected audio snippets into onenote so I could get the quotes right! :D

I am sorry but the so called advertising blitz here in Aus is very poor. I walked through the Southland shopping centre today and barely saw any obvious Lumia marketing. The only big banner advert was at Dick Smith and they didn’t have any phones on display !

The downstairs Telstra store had a White Lumia 800 hidden away on the right hand side entrance. Looks VERY sexy BTW.
No banners, nothing on the windows, zip! This was repeated in all phone stalls, and other Telco stores. All you saw were adverts for Android this and iPhone that.

The other worrying thing is the limited number of Lumia devices being shipped. The Telstra salesperson was enthusiastic about the phone (nice change) and advised me they were selling well. When I asked him how many he said they had sold 27 of their first batch of 30 !!!!! OMG they got shipped only 30 devices !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WT? At least they had the phone in a special place of its own.

The other stores (including the larger upstairs Telstra store) had the black Lumia hidden amongst all the other boring black plastic clones. No advertising of any sort in evidence.

How do we think this is going to achieve critical mass with such poor marketing?

Supply has been a little limited – partly because carriers have been hesitant to “order up” on an OS that previously has not seen “great” sales, and because supply has been a little strangled by some acocunts. The latter is probably just down to the fact that there are so many outlets selling the devices!

There are small but material changes with Nokia and the Lumia. For example, in Frankston (today) – Telstra had a front of store major stand (solo) with Point-of-sale with the Lumia 800 Gloss White! Never before has a windows phone been like that!

Also – the media ads are still there….and remember promo budgets here are limited vs massive OS markets!

Thanks Sheeds and don’t get me wrong I know there is an effort and the resources are limited. But (and I don’t want to be derogatory to Frankston) but why there of all places? Why not the CBD, or Chadstone or some other major location?

Was there some specific demographic in Frankston or is it a good hub for some reason?

If resources are limited then surely they would be carefully used.
