Further to recent tweets, WPDownUnder can confirm that we have heard from multiple sources that WIndows Phone 8 devices have landed Down Under as preview/test units. Whilst information is scarce – and sources are naturally nervous to disclose too much detail – we have what we now believe to be credible corroborated information on at least 3 OEM’s with devices here.

Our information suggests that the current Lumia 800/900 body styling will continue into a Windows Phone 8 range – with a preview unit apparently looking “almost identical” to a current Lumia device. Given the unique polycarbonate body design of both the 800/900, our money is on either a Lumia 800 device with Front Facing Camera or a Lumia 900 styled WP8 device launching later this year. Of course whilst externally it may look the same – expect considerably different internal specs based on the new hardware requirements to be confirmed by Microsoft.
In addition to the Nokia device, WPDownUnder also believes that HTC and Samsung units are in the country, which stands to reason since behind Nokia, these two OEM’s have brought the most WP7 devices to market. No word at this stage on LG (who are focussing on WP8 and have publicly confirmed there are no more WP7 device plans) or any other OEM’s.
We certainly hope to hear some more whispers in the lead up to the first anticipated public disclosure by Microsoft on Windows Phone 8 at their June (20-21) Windows Phone Developer summit. In the meantime, Mary Jo Foley has a good summary of earlier “leaked” information regarding what we might expect in WP8 here.
Sheeds.
