Many sites have discussed the possibility of the incredible Nokia PureView technology making it into September’s Microsoft/Nokia Windows Phone 8 launch. Nokia are already on the record stating that they intend to bring PureView to the Windows Phone platform. Today, as first reported on The Verge, Nokia have teased the global IT and enthusiast community that “Things are about to change” in the lead-up to their big event (which will also time with the EU Nokia World 2012 kick-off). This week, WPDownUnder received information from industry sources that PureView IS coming, and WILL be part of the announcement by Nokia next month.
The Pureview Nokia 808 delivered breakthrough performance and results, re-writing the traditional operation of a digital camera to deliver up to 41Mp resolution pictures and lossless zoom (with limits). Nokia say of the 808;
“We came at this with a whole different approach,” says Dinning. “We knew that easy-to-share, compact files are a big deal to people. So we set out to help them capture high quality 5 megapixel photos, where they could zoom without losing detail, and keep file sizes friendly too.”
With the Nokia 808 PureView – our latest high-end cameraphone – this is achieved by a powerful image sensor, which captures more light, and an image processor which converts the 41 megapixels from the sensor into highly detailed 5MP photos. Importantly, photo file size is about 1 megabyte – which makes it easy to upload to social networking sites straight from a mobile phone.” Nokia Design

Nokia enthusiasts and Windows Phone fans have been drooling at the thought of this arriving in a new Windows Phone 8 device. Many had thought it too soon for Nokia to integrate the PureView technology into the Lumia family in time for the launch of their new range of handsets. Recent leaks have confirmed that the next Lumia model is codenamed the Nokia Phi, and will continue the “upper end” of the Lumia device range following on from the 800/900. WPDownUnder has received information this week advising that not only is this the case – but that the Phi device WILL feature a PureView camera fully integrated and functional with Windows Phone 8. Additionally we were advised it will have micro-sd expansion, making this an absolute killer WP8 offering! Consider;
- Windows Phone 8 (latest/greatest next-gen MS mobile platform)
- Improved OS resolution with directX capable gaming.
- Improved CPU (dual-core is anticipated – remember WP7 ran more smoothly on a 1GHz CPU than most Android multi-cores!)
- PureView Camera Technology + Carl Zeiss
- Micro-SD expansion.
This will deliver on all the “sore points” that detractors marked the current generation of WP7 devices down on – before all the other expected enhancements and improvements of the new OS are even in the picture! Our sources suggest that the device will be available DownUnder in November. So start saving now – or pay by the month if your current contract has expired – because you are going to WANT this phone! We anticipate that devices will be in the country sooner than this (with more insider tip-offs hopefully!) as Nokia negotiates with carriers and retail partners to range this killer device! Here at the WPDU office, we are already thinking of off-loading all our Gen1+2 handsets to make way for this
We can’t wait!
PS – Some pure speculation on our part: 1) The code name Phi comes from the mathematical and artistic proposition of “The Golden Ratio” and 2) The new Nokia teaser video below was shot entirely on a Lumia Phi with PureView!
