Exclusive: Windows RT – Down Under first news on Microsoft Surface RT surfaces!

Microsoft’s most anticipated hardware venture of all time launches next month in the US. Set to underpin its new Windows RT software release and set a high benchmark for their own OEM hardware partners (something Windows Phone lacked until Nokia’s arrival) it is of course their exciting new Microsoft Surface tablet. Coming in two versions, the Surface RT for the ARM chipset and a later Pro version for intel/amd x86 chipsets early 2013, Microsoft are hoping it will form a key “wow” fact in hardware design and performance to show of the Windows 8 operating system for maximum impact. Of course the inevitable questions arising for Aussies are when and where can we get it – and how much will it be? Now we can start providing some exclusive answers to these questions!

We had previously reported here at WPDU that initial reports were suggesting that the device would be available from Microsoft Australia’s online store only. With no brick’s and mortar stores in Australia at present (a prior exclusive by WPDU on the anticipated Sydney 1st MS store in 2013 can be read here), this would have resulted in more limited availability for the portion of the market who buy on impulse in-store, wanted to demo and see/touch a unit before committing to purchase or just refrain from buying online. This looks set to change! Thanks to an impeccable source, we have learnt that Microsoft have been in negotiation with a major Australian retail partner to launch the Surface here locally. Further to this, the advice we have received is that this will be an EXCLUSIVE deal for at least initial availability.

We can’t publicise the name of the retailer – for reasons of commercial sensitivity – however we believe that the device may be shown to select staff at the same time as they participate in scheduled national Windows 8 training sessions run by Microsoft in the lead-up to the OS release on October 26th.

Ok, one down. Two to go.

So with the biggest question at least partially answered, that just leaves how much (TAKE MY MONEY NOW) and when! Being an Aussie, it has typically meant that we face delays and excuses over new tech product releases. “US release today…..yeah we plan to get it to Australia some time in coming months….” is all to often the response we get. Well, in a HUGE win for Aussie customers – our source confirmed that the release date for Australia is set to be OCTOBER 26th…..2012!!! Yep – you heard it - same day release as the US (time lags aside).  This even opens the door to some ‘midnight launches’ as a distinct possibility in selected stores – for some launch excitement and buzz (Yes, even a Live Tweet-up for WPDU from our closest store LOL).

Awesome!

Finally, on pricing we will have to delve into the lands of speculation and guesstimates. Our source would not confirm the big question of how much. Our own WPDU expectation is an Aussie RRP of $699 for the 32GB and $799 64GB – but on this we will all have to wait and see like everyone else – unless YOU have some more info you can share with us!!!

So in the interest of those waiting to read this article – I will leave it there. Some exciting news – and I guess I can scratch plans for my Sister to line-up in the LA Santa Monica store to buy one for me on the 26th in the US :D

Sheeds.

Boring old black for me methinks (at least to start with lol)

I expect Surface pricing to be much better than that – I reckon $499/32GB and $599/64GB is where it should be. Of course, “should” and “will” are different things…

    • http://www.wpdownunder.com/ Sheeds

We can hope. Past experience has killed that particular optimism ;)

The RT tabs can’t retail for more than the iPad; they won’t sell if they do. Hell, I’m not even convinced the x86 tabs could sell for more.

  • Dan Yeomans

    Here’s my money…

  • Narna

Awesome! Thanks Sheeds. Looking forward to it :)

  • Trent

Its gotta be Harvey they are the main company which I see getting really into selling windows 8 tablets over the iPad.

  • http://twitter.com/doktorgphd Doktor G

that is awesome. count me in for the midnight launch!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • John agzarian

I rekon the store is either Harvey Norman or jbhifi, but I hope a Microsoft store opens up in the Sydney cbd to compete with apple and the newly opened Samsung store

  • Rath

If its harveys that would make sense as they are big into taking exclusive lines, just a shame me are relying on harveys staff to be able to sell it as we all know how high quality they are in general

  • KaH

It could be Dick Smith! Harvey at what cost, 25% markup…

  • MasterOfWisdom

Price in the U.s $499, price in Australia $799

$499 is reasonable, $799 will massively hurt Surface in our market.

My tip is Hardley Normal – the traditional retail Australian Launch partner at each major Windows OS lauch. They pioneered the Midnight Sale with Windows launches in Aus. The other bet would be the Telstra Store/Dealer network as this would greatly improve access for “impulse buyers” and makes sense with Telstra & Microsofts relationship with Windows Phone 8 and Cloud services.

I hope it’s not Harvey Norman. They’ll gouge on price.

      • SensoryThought

I have spoken with HN and they are not getting it – in fact I was indicated recently that only Microsoft was going to be selling direct and not to distributors.

    • http://twitter.com/StefEBear Stefan

If it’s Wi-Fi only (as rumours would have it) I doubt any Telco would pick it up.
I’d much prefer Harveys or JBs to be the retailer.
Maybe we can also preorder on the Microsoft Australia Online store as well…..

  • Boggles

Great news. If I know where I will be there @ midnight!

  • alamfour

and then we find out that it is David Jones. :D Sigh

I really like the design and packaging of the surface, but I think that price point comes dangerously close to the more functional atom powered windows 8 tablets (lenovo thinkpad 2 is $799, so is the asus vivo) which will, unlike the rumoured surface prices, likely be priced similarly in Australia to the US. This really needs to either be under $500 or have more high end features like a 1080p screen. And as much as the keyboard choices are nice, OEMs have come up with some good ideas too like having a second battery in the keyboard dock. Despite this I think I will still end up with the surface due to the build quality, most of the alternatives look too plasticky.

Dummies.com have listed an approximate retail value for a competition of $350 for a 32GB Surface RT and two dummies books, estimating a retail of $299 for the 32GB Surface RT in the US. If this pricing proves accurate we should expect an Australian retail of about $399. This makes it about $100 cheaper than the cheapest iPad which I think would be a logical starting price point if Microsoft want Windows 8 RT to take off. Any more and most consumers will just buy an iPad.

  • Lachie

So what happened to this, still happening?? Any follow up would be apreciated sheeds :)

  • deyvit

    Fantastico :D
