Where’s my Update

Further to my recent launch of the WPDownUnder “Where’s my Bloody Update?” page for Aussie Telcos and WP7 software updates, I wanted to let readers know that I have expanded on this. This week I have added a New Zealand (for our cousins across the “dutch”) and a United States separate Update page. With the help of site visitors from these shores (US makes up for more than 15% of my monthly readers for eg.) I hope I can keep on top of where your updates are at for each carrier and device for your respective countries.

Here are the links to each. Please use the contact details on each page to send me any news from your respective countries and I will update these accordingly!

Strange, I don’t have it for my Omnia 7…

it sure is pitiful for MS and Windows Phone here in Oz..

    • RobynWG

Am starting to seriously wonder if Windows Phones will survive in Australia – there just doesn’t seem to be the commitment from carriers…….and this latest news from Microsoft means there is no compulsion to pass on updates.

So glad I Euro unlocked my HTC Mozart.

Windows Phone is surely unloved by Aussie carriers.

    Just for clarification – this page has not been set up for the purpose of embarrassing anyone at MS. The motivation behind this page is to;

    1- Support the #wp7au community &
2- Keep pressure publicly on Australian Carriers for WP7 Updates/Wp7 in general.

    Australia has;
    - No Gen2 handset announcements/releases as yet
    - Nearly all Gen1 handsets EOL (end of life) by carriers
    - No WP7 handsets avaialble for sale online by the three main carriers.
    - No Mango display/test units in retail stores here.

and a general lack of support/transparency by all the carriers.

So this is why I have elected to try and add a resource for Aussie WP7 owners and enthusiasts.

Hopefully Nokia will help with the lack of 2nd Gen devices.

      • http://www.wpdownunder.com Sheeds

I think Nokia will make a massive splash here – and we will really start to see WP7 turn-around when they enter the market. Expect All the carriers and the retail sellers to get right behind Nokia….that is my prediction. The combination of great devices, WP7 OS, Marketing (in-store point of sale, TV, other Media) etc will finally kick-in with Nokia this year.

It’s just a shame that all the telcos have sat on their asses for >6m and just waited for Nokia to come and do the leg-work. The MS soft-launch strategy did not help….but then again, Nokia weren’t on-board then, and WP7 without Mango wasn’t what it is now with all the Mango improvements…

Catch 22 to some degree I guess.

What i dont get is the fact that if you look at the Sales figures for the companies that sell unlocked Windows phones, they are selling many Gen 2 handsets being in the top 20 sales figures.. with Nokia Lumia 800 and 710, Samsung Focus W, Focus S, HTC Titan and Radar all doing relatively well.

Ive got a Lumia 800 and I love it, its collecting the Nokia updates, and im not sure Optus are blocking it.
I bought a Lumia 710 for my mother for $430 outright delivered brand new in Yellow, and she loves it.

Do all the Aussie Carriers have their heads in the sand and can only see Android and iOS…

Thankyou very very much for continuing this page for us Aussies as its very handy.

Sheeds you’re a lej. I’ve been all for WP7 since my Mozart purchased at launch on October 17th 2010. Now running with my HTC Titan, I can’t see myself going back to anything but WP7. Also, will always be buying my international hardware from ebay to be sure I’m getting the updates. Screw the telcos, only interested in the sheep.

i see you have tethering on the list, why not add the visual voicemail as that was supported in mango to the list,
    anyway, gj sheeds

    • http://www.wpdownunder.com Sheeds

      Will do!

      • http://twitter.com/_lon_ Lon

gj, i did read somewhere that one of the carriers were planning to add visual voicemail but at a much later date than when mango was released. I know that aus carriers support visual voicemail for iphones…..

        • http://www.wpdownunder.com Sheeds

Someone told me that apparently the hardware to enable Visual Voicemail for iPhone sits on the Apple server side. Whereas for WP7 – it requires Telco infrastructure to manage. Hence no current support based on ROI for spending the money I’m guessin!

Nokia Lumia devices also apparently receiving an update version today (8107?) with other Nokia firmware. Any confirmation by owners appreciated.

  • Andy

    Where is my update TELSTRA..??????

  • lltc

I got the 8107 update yesterday for my Nokia Lumia 800. i’m on the Optus network :)

    • http://www.wpdownunder.com Sheeds

Thanks. Since no Aussie Carrier is selling them yet…obviously an unlocked device (whos it branded to? Is it also unbranded?)

      • lltc

Yeah unlocked and unbranded…got it from the first batch from mobicity which are the UK models

  • Anonymous

Why the obsession with updates? Mine works fine, I don’t care if I miss all the maintenance releases. Once I get a stable PC system, I always switch off Automatic Updates and I see no reason to worry about my phone, either.

    • http://www.wpdownunder.com Sheeds

The updates tend to contain bug fixes (or feature enhancements like tethering) – the issue isn’t with the update itself…it’s the fact that once MS have it ready to deploy – you are at the mercy of your carrier/telco re: when – or if – they decide to approve that update. Many have not been.

So you have people that need the keyboard bug, or exchange email issue etc fixed, that can’t have the fix until a carrier approves it….weeks or months later.

  • schlubadub

I just received my Telstra 7.10.7740.16 update for my Telstra-branded HTC HD7

    • http://www.wpdownunder.com Sheeds

Next (straight away) you shd also get 8107, then a standalone HTC bugfix update :)

      • schlubadub

Ah cool, a night of updates ahead of me :) The “No information. No ETA.” for the Telstra 7740 entry can finally be updated :)

        • schlubadub

FYI the OS is now 7.10.8107.79 (it’s listed as ‘unknown’ in the update list)

I’ve noticed that the “Mobile Network” settings are different… it used to have a slider to turn 3G on/off, but now it’s a drop-down with “Highest Connection Speed” with “E” and “3G” in the list
